That thing called “Netiquette”

While having my last module in my Higher Education Course in Corporate Communication, I came across a term coined as Netiquette.

So I did a research about the term. The term is a colloquial description of online behavior. The term Netiquette is a portmanteau of the words, Net which means internet or social network, and etiquette which means code of polite behavior.

I have come to realize that the internet, over the years, has been a wonderful tool that provides access to communication and information, and has made our lives simpler. The emergence of social networks has provided a great way to interact with people regardless of whether it’s for business or socializing, and has given ordinary people a voice and the ability to express themselves freely.

The above-going are the reasons why everyone must abide by a social code when using social media, which should make the experience pleasant and safe for everyone. It is, therefore, important to be aware of the ethics and etiquette that comprise the code of ethics and etiquette that govern social media.

Now, I came to this thinking. What are the prescribed Netiquettes when using social networks?

What are the rules of online behavior?

✅ Online communication should not offend or disrespect other people. Bear in mind that in communication through social networks, people do not see each other’s faces, so ironic and double-meaning expressions must be avoided since they will not be interpreted in the same way by everyone.

✅ Behavior online must be the same as in real life. Treat people in the network in the same way as if they were in front of you. Stick to the law and act in an ethical and responsible manner.

✅ Avoid capital letters in messages. The perception of the recipients of a message that is written entirely in capital letters is that the sender is screaming at them. In addition to making reading difficult, it creates a negative image.

✅ The time and bandwidth of other people must be respected. When we send a message through the networks, we are asking recipients to spend part of their time reading it. This is why you should send message only with real interest for its followers and you should not send the same message repeatedly to get more answers.

✅ You must always show your kindness in social networks. Remember that our way of behaving will have an impact on your personal and professional image.

✅ Conversations should be held in a respectful environment. Whatever is published on the networks is subject to comments. Avoid any kind of derogatory and disrespectful comments.

✅ Privacy must be respected. Social networks and the virtual communities generate a huge and important database since they give relevant information. This information is purely professional and should not be misused.

I also remember the famous phrase “think before you click.” I remember further the teachings in our Church, “we are Christian even online.”

Social Media Etiquette or Netiquette is essentially a loose and continuously evolving set of rules governing online communication behavior. It addresses maintaining one’s own and others’ dignity, respect and privacy.
